FAQ

How many seats are there?

There are 420 seats - 250 Deckchairs and 170 straight backed chairs.

Do we have to bring chairs?

We provide the chairs and cushions, for ultimate comfort you can bring a extra cushion.

How do I buy tickets?

Tickets can be pre-purchased online, or come to the Box Office any night from 5.45pm to purchase tickets (when gates open).

What about mosquitoes/midgies?

We do get some biting insects, so for your comfort we provide a luscious Viva La Body repellent for free, or you may prefer to bring your own.

How do I get there?

Come on foot down the well-lit Damoe Ra walkway steps from the Esplanade near Parliament House, or walk to us from the Darwin Waterfront Precinct.

There is also free parking in front of the Cinema, or on busy nights from the Esplanade. Plus we have bike racks if you come on your bicycle.

 

Can I pay by card?

At our kiosk and box office, we take cash, and major cards except Diners and Amex, for purchases over $5 . Our nightly food vendors now accept Card.

Where is the nearest ATM?

If you spend $5 at the Kiosk you can take cash out. Our caterers now accept Card.

What is the food like?

We serve freshly prepared hot food seven nights a week from when our gates open until the start of first screening. If you would like to dine on our delicious dinners then we suggest you arrive i.e. before 7pm to avoid disappointment as the caterers can sell out. What other stuff can I buy from Deckchair Cinema?

Take your own part of the Deckchair Cinema home with our very own stubby holders, caps, stickers and t-shirts and our very own book Flix in the Tropics, all sold at the kiosk!

What’s it like there?

We are on the edge of Darwin Harbour where we enjoy glorious Top End sunsets over the water. The grounds are edged by trees and this little patch of remnant forest provides wildlife with a little piece of heaven! So we have possums, barking owls and more, that frequently visit after dark. Watch your food!

Who runs the Deckchair Cinema?

We are a community-run, Not-For-Profit venue operated by the Darwin Film Society and its 1000 odd members. All profits are used for our initiatives: Deckchair Cinema, Flix in the Wet and Darwin International Film Festival and other projects we like to support, such as Community Fundraiser Nights.

What is your approach to sustainability?

The Deckchair Cinema aims to be sustainable and tries to minimise its waste.

We do not sell any bottled water, instead offering free filtered water for unlimited re-fills!
We supply re-usable cups, Bio-degradable cutlery, sell predominately Darwin and Australian made products and have discontinued serving plastic straws.
We use Eco-friendly office supplies.
We supply Chemical-free insect repellent for FREE!
We ask all patrons to place any rubbish and recycling in the correct bins.

 

WET WEATHER POLICY

At Deckchair Cinema, we work by the motto… The show must go on! So you can rest assured we’ll be working hard behind the scenes so you can enjoy a terrific film.

 
We’re lucky in Darwin, as storms generally occur late afternoon and have ceased raining before the film starts at 7:30pm each night. Water is easily shaken from the nylon deckchairs and we have towels on standby if required. After an afternoon storm it is extremely pleasant to sit outside at the Deckchair and enjoy a film.We also have undercover areas where you can retreat out of the rain. 
 
 
In the event of: 
 
 
Light Rain:        We will continue to show the film, you can take shelter under the kiosk awning or enjoy the pleasant rain.
Heavy Rain:     We will pause or delay the film for a short period until the rain eases. 
Cancellation:  If the rain is too heavy and we cancel the film, you will receive complimentary tickets to another screening.
No Show:           If the show goes on, but you don’t attend, we will not provide a refund.
